The Rancilio s27 series is a member of the s20 series by Rancilio. Originally released in the early 90′s this machine was very popular in North America at the time, until it was replaced by the Epoca series.
This unit is great for light commercial and restaurant use. However if you can get one for personal use, you’ll have a match made in heaven! It’s a 110v AC unit, and would do best on a dedicated 20A circuit.
Firstly, it’s a very heavy unit for a single group. The sides are all steel, the frame is also heavy steel, all powder coated. The boiler is mounted vertically in this model with no real means to drain the boiler for descaling, it will involve the boiler entirely or allowing the pump to suck of descaling solution to get into the boiler to do it’s job. With a proper water filtration system you should only need to descale once a year depending on your location.
This model in partiular, the s27, has all the usual commercial features, rotary vane pump, direct drive motor, push button dosing, including a tea water dosing button. One thing this model is missing is an actual drain, instead it has a very deep, over 3″ troth to catch water, grinds etc, and must be manually emptied.
Parts are plentiful for this machine and are very capable once they are up and running. Highly recommended if you ever come by one, to pick it up and refurbish it. It’s a beautiful machine.
